Connect your domain to C Building: add DNS records at Squarespace

The short version

If your domain's nameservers are *.squarespacedns.com (or it moved over from Google Domains), go to "DNS" → "DNS Settings" in your Squarespace domains dashboard, delete "Squarespace Defaults" and any old records for the names on the card, then add the card's records under "Custom Records" with "Add record". Changes usually take effect within 24 to 48 hours.

When you connect a domain, C Building first looks at where the domain's DNS is, that is, its nameservers. You add the records wherever the DNS is, which isn't necessarily where you bought the domain. For example, a domain bought at Squarespace with its DNS on Cloudflare gets its records at Cloudflare.

The records to add (type, name, value) are the ones listed on the card when you connect the domain, so this guide gives no fixed values. Use the record types exactly as the card shows them; if a name already has an old record, edit or delete it first, then add what the card lists.

When this guide applies

When the domain's nameservers are .squarespacedns.com (Squarespace's DNS). Domains from Google Domains have moved to Squarespace: if the domain is managed at Squarespace and its nameservers are ns-cloud-.googledomains.com, follow this guide at Squarespace too. If the nameservers belong to another company, add the records there.

Adding the records at Squarespace

  1. Open your Squarespace domains dashboard and select the domain.
  2. Select "DNS", then "DNS Settings".
  3. If the card has a record for @ or www and you see "Squarespace Defaults", select the trash can next to it, enter your password (or two-factor code), select "Continue", then "Delete". Also delete any other existing record for the names on the card: select the trash can next to it, then "Confirm".
  4. Scroll to "Custom Records" and select "Add record" (if asked, enter your password again and select "Continue").
  5. Choose the record type under "Type", enter its "Name" ("@" for the domain itself, "www" for www), put its value in "IP Address" (A records) or "Data" (CNAME and TXT records), and select "Save".
  6. Repeat "Add record" for every record on the card.

Good to know

  • Removing "Squarespace Defaults" disconnects the domain from any Squarespace site and stops PayPal Payment Links.
  • A CNAME record cannot use "@" as its "Name".
  • If a new record conflicts with another record or a domain forwarding rule, Squarespace shows an error: remove the conflicting record or forwarding first, then add it again.
  • A domain that moved over from Google Domains has an extra CNAME record whose value ends in .googlehosted.com. You can leave it alone.

How long it takes

Squarespace says DNS changes usually take 24 to 48 hours to fully update.

These steps follow Squarespace's help pages: DNS records for web hosting, adding and deleting custom DNS records, former Google Domains domains.

Once the records are in, C Building checks them automatically. There's no need to come back and let us know.

If you would rather let C Building manage the DNS, the first guide shows how to change the nameservers at Squarespace.
