How to change nameservers at Namecheap, Squarespace (incl. Google Domains) and Wix

The short version

Namecheap: Domain List → Manage → Nameservers → Custom DNS. Squarespace (including former Google Domains): the domain's DNS → Domain Nameservers → Use Custom Nameservers; it turns off DNSSEC and disconnects the domain from your Squarespace site. Wix: Manage DNS records → Use custom nameservers; it takes exactly two, and Wix's DNS records stop working.

  3. Namecheap

  5. Wix (domains bought from Wix)

All three let you switch to custom nameservers, but the side effects differ, especially at Squarespace and Wix. Button names below are quoted from each registrar's help center.

The steps follow each help center, checked on October 15, 2026: Namecheap, Squarespace and Wix.

Step 1: start hosting in C Building first

Order matters: finish the setup in C Building first, then change the nameservers at Namecheap, Squarespace or Wix. If you change the nameservers first, your old records stop working at once, and your website and email can go down.

  1. On the website's "Domains & publishing" page, or the "Domain" tab in the editor settings panel, find "Let C Building manage your DNS" and click "Let C Building manage DNS".
  2. Choose how to read your current records: "Detect automatically", "Import from Cloudflare" or "Paste a zone file".
  3. Under "Confirm the records to bring over", tick each record you want, use "Add a record" for any that are missing, then click "Start hosting".
  4. The screen shows "Last step: change the nameservers at your registrar" with four nameservers and a "Copy all" button.

C Building's four nameservers are ns1.cbuilding.net, ns2.cbuilding.net, ns3.cbuilding.net and ns4.cbuilding.net. After you start hosting, change the nameservers within 3 days. If you don't, this setup and the records you brought over are deleted, and you have to click "Start again". The full flow is in Let C Building manage your DNS.

At a glance

NamecheapNo limit stated; enter all fourUp to 24 hours (more in rare cases)Old records are not copied over
Squarespace2 to 13Up to 48 hoursDNSSEC turned off; domain disconnects from the site

Namecheap

  1. Sign in to your Namecheap account.
  2. In the left sidebar, choose "Domain List", then click "Manage" next to the domain.
  3. In the "Nameservers" section, open the drop-down and choose "Custom DNS".
  4. Enter ns1.cbuilding.net to ns4.cbuilding.net and click the green checkmark to save.

Namecheap says it takes up to 24 hours (more, in rare cases). Your host records at Namecheap are not copied to the new nameservers, so bring them over when you start hosting in C Building. Some TLDs (such as .CM, .CA, .FR and .IS) have their own nameserver rules.

Squarespace (including former Google Domains)

  1. Open the domains dashboard and click the domain.
  2. Click DNS, then Domain Nameservers.
  3. Click Use Custom Nameservers.
  4. Enter your password or 2FA code, then click Continue.
  5. Click Continue at the prompt to disable DNSSEC.
  6. Fill in Nameserver 1 and Nameserver 2 with ns1.cbuilding.net and ns2.cbuilding.net, then add fields for ns3.cbuilding.net and ns4.cbuilding.net.
  7. Click Save.
  • Squarespace accepts 2 to 13 nameservers and says it can take up to 48 hours.
  • Your domain disconnects from your Squarespace site, and Squarespace's DNS records (such as MX and DKIM) stop applying, so bring them into C Building. PayPal Payment Links also stop working.
  • To switch back, use the same path and choose Use Squarespace nameservers.

Domains from Google Domains: on September 7, 2023, Squarespace acquired all domain registrations from Google Domains, so you change them at Squarespace. Log in at squarespace.com/login with your Google Domains email, or use "Continue with Google". If that fails, use "Can't log in" → "Send verification email". The default nameservers may still end in .googledomains.com. See Squarespace's article. Google Cloud Domains is a different product, managed in the Google Cloud console with Custom DNS (Google's FAQ).

Wix (domains bought from Wix)

Before you start, unassign the domain from your Wix site.

  1. Open the Domains page.
  2. Click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain.
  3. Choose "Manage DNS records".
  4. Scroll to Nameservers and click "Use custom nameservers".
  5. Enter ns1.cbuilding.net and ns2.cbuilding.net in Nameserver 1 and Nameserver 2.
  6. Click Continue, tick the confirmation box, then click "Switch nameservers".
  • Wix takes exactly two nameservers. ns1 and ns2 work fine.
  • It can take up to 48 hours.
  • Wix's DNS records stop working and Wix can no longer renew SSL through DNS. If you use Wix mailboxes, they need MX records at the new provider; bring them over when you start hosting in C Building.
  • To switch back, choose "Reset to Wix".

How long does it take, and how do I check?

Each registrar's own timing is in the table above. C Building says it usually takes minutes to hours, and can take up to 48 hours. Once it takes effect, your website connects automatically.

  • When you're done at the registrar, go back to C Building and click "Check now".
  • When it says "The nameservers have changed. Your DNS is now managed by C Building.", you're done. Use "Manage DNS records" to edit records from then on.
  • If it says "The nameservers have not changed yet.", it also lists the nameservers the registry has on file, so you can spot a typo.
  • Filling in only some of the nameservers still works, but all four is more reliable.

If the nameservers are later changed away from C Building, record editing is paused. If they are not changed back within 14 days, hosting ends automatically. Before you switch, also read Before you change nameservers: email and DNSSEC.
