When you connect a domain, C Building first looks at where the domain's DNS is, that is, its nameservers. You add the records wherever the DNS is, which isn't necessarily where you bought the domain. For example, a domain bought at GoDaddy with its DNS on Cloudflare gets its records at Cloudflare.
The records to add (type, name, value) are the ones listed on the card when you connect the domain, so this guide gives no fixed values. Use the record types exactly as the card shows them; if a name already has an old record, edit or delete it first, then add what the card lists.
When this guide applies
When the domain's nameservers are Cloudflare's. These domains can usually use Set up with Cloudflare instead of adding records by hand. If you aren't the domain owner, prefer not to grant access, or the one-click setup isn't working, add the records in Cloudflare as described here.
Adding the records at Cloudflare
- Sign in to Cloudflare, select your account and domain, and go to "DNS Records".
- If "@" or "www" already has an A, AAAA or CNAME record, select "Edit" to change it or "Delete" to remove it. The card decides the record type: an old record of a different type has to be deleted and added again.
- For each record, select "Add record", choose the "Type", and enter the name and value.
- For A and CNAME records, set "Proxy status" to "DNS only" (grey cloud), never the orange "Proxied". Otherwise C Building can't verify the domain or issue its HTTPS certificate.
- Select "Save".
How long it takes
Usually within a few minutes.
These steps follow Cloudflare's documentation: Create DNS records, Proxy status.
Once the records are in, C Building checks them automatically. There's no need to come back and let us know.
