Connect your domain to C Building: add DNS records at Amazon Route 53

The short version

If your domain's nameservers are ns-number.awsdns-number.com (or .net, .org, .co.uk), go to Route 53 in the AWS console, "Hosted zones", change any record with the same name and type to the card's value with "Edit record", and add the others with "Create record", leaving "Record name" empty for the domain itself. It usually works within a minute.

When you connect a domain, C Building first looks at where the domain's DNS is, that is, its nameservers. You add the records wherever the DNS is, which isn't necessarily where you bought the domain. For example, a domain bought at GoDaddy with its DNS on Amazon Route 53 gets its records at Route 53.

The records to add (type, name, value) are the ones listed on the card when you connect the domain, so this guide gives no fixed values. Use the record types exactly as the card shows them; if a name already has an old record, edit or delete it first, then add what the card lists.

When this guide applies

Only when the domain's nameservers are ns-number.awsdns-number.com, .net, .org or .co.uk (for example ns-123.awsdns-45.com; there are usually four), which is Amazon Route 53's DNS. If they belong to another company, add the records there.

Route 53 is part of an AWS account. If a developer set up your website or domain on AWS, you may need to ask them to sign in and add the records on the card.

Adding the records at Amazon Route 53

  1. Sign in to the AWS console and open Route 53.
  2. Choose "Hosted zones", then your domain's hosted zone.
  3. If a record with the same name and type as one on the card already exists, select it, change its value under "Edit record" to the one on the card and choose "Save changes" instead of creating a second one.
  4. For each other record on the card, choose "Create record": enter the card's name in "Record name" (leave it empty for "@", don't type "@"; type "www" for www), choose its "Record type", enter its value in "Value", and keep "Simple routing".
  5. Choose "Create records".

Things to know

  • Put TXT values in double quotes (for example "value").
  • If a name already has an old record of a type that isn't on the card (for example the card has an A record for www and the old one is a CNAME), delete that record first, then add the card's record.
  • If you have several hosted zones with this name, edit the one whose name servers the domain actually uses.

How long it takes

Route 53 usually sends a change to all its name servers within 60 seconds. Places that looked up the old record may keep showing the old value until the old record's TTL runs out.

These steps follow the AWS documentation: creating records, values shared by all records, values for simple records, editing records.

Once the records are in, C Building checks them automatically. There's no need to come back and let us know.
