When you connect a domain, C Building first looks at where the domain's DNS is, that is, its nameservers. You add the records wherever the DNS is, which isn't necessarily where you bought the domain. For example, a domain bought at Porkbun with its DNS on Cloudflare gets its records at Cloudflare.
The records to add (type, name, value) are the ones listed on the card when you connect the domain, so this guide gives no fixed values. Use the record types exactly as the card shows them; if a name already has an old record, edit or delete it first, then add what the card lists.
When this guide applies
Only when the domain's nameservers are *.ns.porkbun.com (Porkbun's DNS, for example curitiba.ns.porkbun.com and fortaleza.ns.porkbun.com). If they belong to another company, add the records there.
Adding the records at Porkbun
- Log in to Porkbun. You land on "Domain Management" (or open "ACCOUNT" at the top right, then "Domain Management").
- Select "DNS" under your domain.
- Delete the existing records for the names on the card (such as @ and www), including any record whose value is "pixie.porkbun.com" (Porkbun's parking page).
- For each record on the card, select "Add Record", choose its "Type", enter its "Host" (leave it empty where the card shows "@", type "www" for www), put its value in "Answer", leave TTL at the default, and select "Add".
- Check that the new records are listed.
Good to know
- Porkbun uses an empty "Host" for the domain itself instead of "@".
- If you see "Could not add DNS record: A CNAME or ALIAS record with that host already exists", the parking records (or an old host's records) are still there: delete them and add the record again.
How long it takes
Porkbun says the site should come online within 24 to 48 hours.
These steps follow Porkbun's knowledge base: How to add DNS records on Porkbun, A CNAME or ALIAS record with that host already exists.
Once the records are in, C Building checks them automatically. There's no need to come back and let us know.
Want C Building to manage your DNS? Change the nameservers
Adding the records above is enough to connect the website; you don't need to change the nameservers. Do this part only if you choose to let C Building manage this domain's DNS instead. Nameservers are changed where you bought the domain (the registrar), so this part is for domains bought at Porkbun.
Once the nameservers change, the DNS records kept at Porkbun stop working. Move email and any other records to C Building first, or email may stop arriving: see Before you change nameservers: email records, DNSSEC and registrar extras.
- Log in to Porkbun and open "Domain Management".
- Open "Details" on the far right of your domain, find "Nameservers" and select the edit icon.
- Remove all current entries and enter C Building's nameservers, one per line: ns1.cbuilding.net, ns2.cbuilding.net, ns3.cbuilding.net and ns4.cbuilding.net.
- Select "Save Nameservers" (and "Submit" if asked to confirm).
- Open "Details" again to check the new nameservers are shown.
Porkbun web hosting and email usually stop working after the change. It usually takes a few hours, at most 48 hours.
These steps follow Porkbun's knowledge base: How to change nameservers.
Once they're changed, C Building checks automatically too. There's no need to come back and let us know.
