When you connect a domain, C Building first looks at where the domain's DNS is, that is, its nameservers. You add the records wherever the DNS is, which isn't necessarily where you bought the domain. For example, a domain bought at OVHcloud with its DNS on Cloudflare gets its records at Cloudflare.
The records to add (type, name, value) are the ones listed on the card when you connect the domain, so this guide gives no fixed values. Use the record types exactly as the card shows them; if a name already has an old record, edit or delete it first, then add what the card lists.
When this guide applies
Only when the domain's nameservers are nsXX.ovh.net or dnsXX.ovh.net (XX is a number, for example ns111.ovh.net and dns111.ovh.net), the same on .ovh.ca, or ns200.anycast.me and dns200.anycast.me (OVHcloud's DNS). If they belong to another company, add the records there.
Adding the records at OVHcloud
- Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel, go to "Web Cloud" → "Domain names", select your domain and open the "DNS zone" tab.
- Delete old records with the same names as the card's records (A or AAAA; on www also CNAME or TXT): on that row, open the "⋮" menu → "Delete the entry" and confirm. Leave records with other names as they are.
- Select "Add an entry" above the table and choose the record's type as the card shows.
- Enter the card's name in "Subdomain" (empty for the domain itself, "www" for www) and its value in "Target".
- Leave TTL as it is and select "Add". Repeat steps 3 to 5 for each record on the card.
Things to know
- If the card has a CNAME record, end its "Target" with a dot (for example "value.example."). OVHcloud says that without the final dot, your domain name is appended to the target.
- OVHcloud has separate Control Panels by region (for example, customers in Europe and in Canada or the US use different ones); log in to the one where your account is.
How long it takes
Up to 24 hours.
These steps follow OVHcloud's documentation: editing a DNS zone, creating an A record, creating a CNAME record.
Once the records are in, C Building checks them automatically. There's no need to come back and let us know.
Want C Building to manage your DNS? Change the nameservers
If you'd rather not add records yourself, C Building can manage the domain's DNS instead: choose that on the card when you connect the domain, then change the domain's nameservers to ns1.cbuilding.net, ns2.cbuilding.net, ns3.cbuilding.net and ns4.cbuilding.net. After that there are no records to add; the website connects by itself. Only do this if you choose to.
Nameservers are changed where the domain is registered. The steps below are for a domain registered at OVHcloud; if it is registered somewhere else, change them there.
Move your e-mail records first: OVHcloud doesn't copy the records in its DNS zone, so e-mail and other records must be set up at the new DNS first. If the domain receives e-mail, read Before changing nameservers: e-mail records and DNSSEC first.
- Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel, go to "Web Cloud" → "Domain names" and select your domain.
- Open the "DNS servers" tab and select "Modify DNS servers" (on a small screen it may be below the table).
- Enter ns1.cbuilding.net in "DNS server" (leave the IP empty) and select "+". Do the same for ns2.cbuilding.net, ns3.cbuilding.net and ns4.cbuilding.net.
- Select "Apply configuration", check the summary, and select "Apply".
- Only these four name servers should stay; remove the OVHcloud ones.
- OVHcloud sends the change to the registry first (see "Ongoing operations"); after that it can take up to 48 hours.
These steps follow OVHcloud's documentation: modifying a domain name's DNS servers.
