When you connect a domain, C Building first looks at where the domain's DNS is, that is, its nameservers. You add the records wherever the DNS is, which isn't necessarily where you bought the domain. For example, a domain bought at Name.com with its DNS on Cloudflare gets its records at Cloudflare.
The records to add (type, name, value) are the ones listed on the card when you connect the domain, so this guide gives no fixed values. Use the record types exactly as the card shows them; if a name already has an old record, edit or delete it first, then add what the card lists.
When this guide applies
Only when the domain's nameservers are Name.com's DNS: names that start with ns and a number and end in .name.com, such as ns1.name.com to ns4.name.com or ns1dns.name.com. If they belong to another company, add the records there.
Adding the records at Name.com
- Log in to Name.com and select "My Domains" at the top right.
- Select your domain, then "Manage DNS Records".
- If a record already exists for the same Host (for example an old A record with an empty Host, or a www record), remove it first.
- For each record on the card, choose its "Type", enter its "Host" (leave it empty where the card shows "@", type "www" for www), put its value in "Answer", leave TTL at 300, and select "Add Record".
- Repeat for every record on the card.
Good to know
- Name.com uses an empty "Host" for the domain itself instead of "@".
- Never leave "Host" empty on a CNAME record: it can override other records such as MX, and email can stop working.
How long it takes
Name.com says the domain should be working within 24 hours.
These steps follow Name.com's help center: Adding an A record, Adding a CNAME Record.
Once the records are in, C Building checks them automatically. There's no need to come back and let us know.
Want C Building to manage your DNS? Change the nameservers
Adding the records above is enough to connect the website; you don't need to change the nameservers. Do this part only if you choose to let C Building manage this domain's DNS instead. Nameservers are changed where you bought the domain (the registrar), so this part is for domains bought at Name.com.
Once the nameservers change, the DNS records kept at Name.com stop working. Move email and any other records to C Building first, or email may stop arriving: see Before you change nameservers: email records, DNSSEC and registrar extras.
- Log in to Name.com and select "My Domains" at the top right.
- Select your domain, then "Manage Nameservers" under "Domain Actions".
- Select "Delete All" to clear the current nameservers.
- Type ns1.cbuilding.net in "Add Nameserver" and select "Add". Then add ns2.cbuilding.net, ns3.cbuilding.net and ns4.cbuilding.net the same way, one at a time.
- Select "Save Changes".
Delete the old nameservers before adding the new ones, or the website and email will not work. Name.com needs at least two nameservers; enter all four. It takes about 48 hours.
These steps follow Name.com's help center: Changing nameservers for DNS management.
Once they're changed, C Building checks automatically too. There's no need to come back and let us know.
