WordPress is one of the most widely used ways to build a website, and many freelancers and agencies build their clients' sites on it. AI website builders are the newer route: describe your business, and the AI builds the whole site.
Both can produce a good-looking business website. The difference is who handles the technical side, and how easy it is to change the site after launch. This guide compares cost, learning curve, upkeep and who each suits, then helps you choose.
The differences at a glance
Sources: WordPress.com pricing (Personal is $4 a month billed yearly for the first year, $5 after); premium themes GeneratePress Premium ($59 a year) and Astra Pro ($99 the first year, then $149). Prices checked September 28, 2026.
Why people choose WordPress: almost no limits
- Plugins for everything: bookings, memberships, multiple languages, online stores, forms.
- Full control: self-hosted, the files and database are yours, and you can move to any host.
- Plenty of help: many freelancers know WordPress, so finding someone is easy.
- Content-heavy sites: for media sites or blogs with lots of posts and categories, WordPress is very mature.
The price of WordPress: the technical work is yours
The software is free, but keeping it running well takes ongoing effort:
- Plugin and theme updates: skip them and you risk security holes; apply them and a plugin may break another.
- Backups: you set them up yourself, so you can recover when something goes wrong.
- Speed: the more plugins, the slower the site can get, which means caching and image optimization.
- Security: because WordPress is so widespread, it is a common target for automated attacks, so you need security plugins or protection from your host.
- Learning curve: the admin has a lot of settings, and first-timers need time to find their way around.
If you would rather not deal with any of this, you pay a developer. Upwork puts website maintenance at $50–$200 a month (cost guide).
Why people choose an AI website builder: hand over the technical and design work
An AI website builder includes hosting and system updates in the subscription, so you never need to know what a plugin or a cache is. On C Building:
- A first version in minutes: describe your business, your customers and the style you like in everyday language, and the AI builds a complete website with layout and copy.
- Two ways to edit: tell the AI "change the haircut price to $45", or click any text or image on the page and change it yourself.
- Clear pricing: start free, with 100 points when you sign up and a C Building web address (no custom domain). Pro is US$20 a month (excluding tax) with 2,000 points every month and unlimited custom domains. Points pay for AI by usage and for the time your website's editing environment runs; hosting and visitor traffic use none. The domain is registered separately.
- Basic SEO settings: set each page's title, description and share image yourself; a sitemap is generated when you publish.
- Built-in forms: contact, booking-request and quote forms land in your inbox and email you, with no form plugin to install.
- Version history: if an edit goes wrong, restore an earlier version.
The limits of an AI website builder
- Features come from the platform: you cannot install arbitrary plugins as you can on WordPress. C Building has no shopping cart or online payments, and no booking calendar with time slots (bookings come in as form requests). For selling online, memberships or courses, WordPress or a specialist platform fits better.
- Multiple languages: a C Building site's pages are in one language (Traditional or Simplified Chinese, English, Thai, Vietnamese or Indonesian), while its articles can have versions in several languages; for a site where every page is multilingual, WordPress's translation plugins are more complete.
- The site lives on the platform: it runs on the platform's hosting, rather than as files you can take anywhere like self-hosted WordPress.
- AI work uses points: each turn of chat with the AI uses points by usage (at most 50 a turn), and the website's editing environment uses about 24 points an hour while it runs, including while you click and type changes yourself. Free gives 100 points when you sign up; Pro gives 2,000 a month.
Example: the first year of an eight-page studio website
Hosting is $3–$18 a month for 12 months; a .com domain is $10.46 a year at Cloudflare Registrar or $18.48–$22.99 on renewal elsewhere; maintenance is $50–$200 a month (Upwork). C Building is priced in US dollars, excluding tax; Pro includes 2,000 points a month, and you can top up if you use more. C Building Free costs nothing, but it has no custom domain and only the 100 points you get when you sign up, so a business site on its own domain needs Pro. The build itself is not included: having someone build the WordPress site is typically $2,000–$8,000 more.
On the numbers alone, self-hosted WordPress that you maintain yourself can be the cheapest, provided you have the time and want to learn. Once you pay someone to maintain it, WordPress becomes the most expensive option.
How to choose
Choose WordPress if you…
- need features that only plugins provide (memberships, courses, complex bookings or a store)
- run a site that is mostly articles, like a media site or content blog
- are somewhat technical, or already work with a developer
- care about being able to take the site's files anywhere
Choose an AI website builder if you…
- need a good-looking, accurate site: about, services, prices, work, contact details
- would rather not deal with hosting and plugins
- want small changes like prices or opening hours to be something you do yourself, anytime
- want to be live this week
Already on WordPress and want to switch?
You do not have to start over. When you create a site, choose "Move my website" and paste your current site's address. C Building checks it, shows that it was built with WordPress and how many pages and articles it found, and asks whether to move it as it is or give it a new look. The website AI then moves your pages, articles, categories, authors and images; moved as it is, every address stays the same. After that you edit it by chat or by click. The AI reads your live site, so the old site needs to be online, and plugin features such as a shop or memberships may not come along. If the domain is registered to you, move it to the new site once you are happy with it.
Frequently asked questions
Is WordPress free?
The software is free, but to run a website you need hosting (big shared hosts advertise about $3–$4 a month on long prepaid terms, renewing at roughly $10–$18), a domain, and usually a premium theme or plugins. Or use WordPress.com's hosted plans, from $4 a month billed yearly for the first year.
Can I use WordPress without coding?
Yes, but you need time to learn the admin, choose a theme, install plugins and keep them updated. An AI website builder skips all of that: describe what you need and get a complete site.
Which is better for SEO, WordPress or an AI website builder?
Both can do SEO well. Rankings depend mostly on clear, useful content, plus speed and basic settings. On WordPress you usually install and configure an SEO plugin; on C Building you set each page's title and description, and the sitemap is generated for you.
Can I move a WordPress site to an AI website builder?
Yes. When you create a site, choose "Move my website" and paste your current site's address; the website AI moves your pages, articles and images, either as they are (same addresses) or with a new design. Sites built with Wix, Shopify, Squarespace or Webflow can be moved too. After that you keep editing with the AI or by clicking.
Which is cheaper?
Self-hosted WordPress that you maintain yourself is about $105–$340 in the first year, the cheapest, but it costs your time. C Building Pro is about $250–$263 in the first year including a domain ($20 a month, excluding tax). WordPress with paid maintenance is about $705–$2,740 a year.
The bottom line
WordPress gives you the most flexibility, at the cost of doing the technical work yourself or paying someone to. An AI website builder wraps up the technical and design work so you can focus on your content and your business. If you want a good-looking site that stays accurate, an AI website builder saves time and hassle; if you need lots of plugin features or full control of the files, choose WordPress.
