This guide is about domains that were bought through Shopify, Netlify or Tencent Cloud. If your domain is registered elsewhere and only connected to a Shopify or Netlify site, change the nameservers at that registrar instead; see the guides for GoDaddy and Namecheap, Squarespace and Wix.
Two options
- Add records: keep the DNS on the platform and add the records listed in C Building's domain settings (Type / Host / Value) to its DNS settings. Your website connects, but other DNS changes still happen on that platform.
- Transfer the domain out: move it to a registrar that allows custom nameservers, then let C Building manage your DNS. This is possible once 60 days have passed since purchase, transfer-in or a contact change.
Shopify
Shopify's help center says a Shopify-managed domain needs to use the default Shopify nameservers (Shopify Help). It only describes editing DNS records (Edit DNS settings):
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains.
- Click the domain you want to configure.
- In the DNS settings section, click Manage.
- To add a record, click Add custom record, select the record type, enter the details C Building lists, then click Confirm.
- To change an existing record, click Actions > Edit for it, edit the details, then click Confirm.
Shopify DNS supports A, CNAME, MX, TXT, AAAA and SRV records, and Shopify says changes take up to 24 hours. A Shopify domain can be transferred out 60 days after purchase, transfer-in or a contact change.
Netlify
Netlify's docs say that to transfer a Netlify-registered domain to another registrar you contact Netlify support, and that ICANN does not permit transfers within 60 days of registration (Netlify Docs). Netlify staff have also replied on the official forum: "You won't be able to change the name servers, however we can transfer the domain to you." (Netlify Support Forums)
- Add records: add the records C Building lists in Netlify DNS.
- Transfer out: after 60 days, contact Netlify support. Netlify registers domains through Name.com, so support can move the domain to your own Name.com account.
Tencent Cloud: worth a try, not guaranteed
Tencent Cloud allows custom DNS, but its rule says custom nameservers must be a DNS provider's authoritative nameservers, not servers you run yourself (Tencent Cloud docs). C Building's nameservers, ns1.cbuilding.net to ns4.cbuilding.net, run on Amazon Route 53 but are named under cbuilding.net. We have not tested whether Tencent Cloud accepts them.
You can try. Tencent Cloud's console is in Simplified Chinese; the steps are:
- In "My Domains" (我的域名), select the domain and choose More (更多操作) > Modify DNS (修改 DNS).
- Complete the identity check (a code is sent to the email address bound to the account).
- In "Modify DNS servers", choose custom DNS and enter C Building's nameservers.
Tencent Cloud says it takes 24–48 hours (Tencent Cloud docs). DNS can't be changed while the domain is in its renewal grace period, redemption period or transfer period (Tencent Cloud FAQ). If the change is refused, use the first option: add the records C Building lists at the DNS service the domain uses now.
When adding records
- Use the records table in C Building's domain settings, including the TXT verification record on the
_cloubie-verifyhost. - When they're in, verify in C Building.
- If you see "Delete the domain's AAAA (IPv6) record so the HTTPS certificate can be issued.", do that.
